Newston School Science Magazine
The School Science Magazine
Being a member of the Newston magazine editorial board has been a transformative experience. I still remember the day when I nervously submitted my application, hoping to be accepted and the excitement that ensued when I realized I had been accepted just a few days later. Since then, we set our minds to making the next 7 editions the best ones possible. Throughout my tenure, I have attempted to contribute meaningfully to each edition. Writing an article on the role of physics in the swing of a cricket ball and an article on AI generated art both allowed me to explore topics I am interested in and apply scientific theory to real-life
Through writing and editing many articles for the magazine, I have also realized the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to scientific writing. Many articles used the natural sciences of physics, chemistry and biology but numerous had strong links with computer science as well as mathematics. The sports edition even featured many references to sports science concepts! This was something that pleasantly surprised me over the course of the journey, and what I believe to be a natural expansion of Newston. It has gone beyond being just a ‘science magazine’ and refuses to be boxed in. It has become a space to share interdisciplinary knowledge with a focus on science.

Overall, I believe that we as an editorial board have been able to implement many new changes improving upon the structure and design of the magazine, crafting it into a monthly ‘experience’. We have tried our best to turn it into an engaging space that can be a platform to share knowledge and become a monthly talking point in our community. The addition of a quiz to each edition to increase engagement, the use of feedback forms to tailor the editions to our audience and most importantly, the expansion of the magazine from the DPCP space to the MYP space have all contributed to this endeavour. I believe the holistic changes we implemented have raised the bar and added to the legacy of the Newston Magazine and I am confident that the next editorial board will carry on from where we are signing off.
